Santa Maria del Camí, often simply called Santa Maria, is a charming municipality in the heart of Mallorca. It is known for its traditional Mallorcan character, the weekly market and its proximity to the wine-growing areas.
Location and surroundings:
Santa Maria is located about 15 kilometers north of Palma, the capital of Mallorca. The municipality covers an area of around 38 square kilometers and includes the main town of Santa Maria del Camí as well as smaller villages. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, vineyards and agricultural land. The proximity to the Serra de Tramuntana mountains in the north also offers opportunities for hikes and excursions into nature.
History:
The history of Santa Maria goes back a long way. Archaeological finds prove that it was settled as early as the pre-Talayotic period (approx. 3000-1400 BC). Today’s village developed around a church that was built around 1216. Over the centuries, Santa Maria was mainly characterized by agriculture, especially wine growing.
Sights and activities:
Parish church of Santa Maria: The massive church with its striking bell tower is the town’s landmark. It was built around 1216 and later remodeled several times.
Weekly market: A large and popular weekly market takes place in Santa Maria every Sunday. Regional products, handicrafts, clothing and much more are offered here. The market is an important meeting place for locals and tourists.
Wine tasting: Santa Maria is located in the middle of an important wine-growing region. Numerous wineries (bodegas) in the area offer wine tastings and guided tours. Well-known wineries in the area include Macià Batle.
Hiking and cycling: The area around Santa Maria is ideal for hiking and cycling tours. There are various routes with different levels of difficulty. The “El Camí” cultural trail, which runs through the interior of the island, also passes through Santa Maria.
Festa del Vi Novell: In November, the traditional wine festival “Festa del Vi Novell” takes place to celebrate the new wine.
Special features:
Popular place to live: Santa Maria is particularly popular with German residents of working age and young families. The town offers good connections to Palma, a rural setting and a village atmosphere.
Good infrastructure: Santa Maria has a good infrastructure with stores, restaurants, cafés, schools and public transportation. There is a good connection to the highway and a train connection to Palma.
