Portocolom (also Porto Colom) is located on Mallorca’s east coast, around 60 kilometers from Palma, and belongs to the municipality of Felanitx. The former fishing village with around 4,000 inhabitants has retained its original character and is considered one of the island’s best-kept secrets. The wide-sweeping Badia de Portocolom forms Mallorca’s largest natural harbor. The name probably derives from the Latin Portus Columbi – a popular legend also links the town to Christopher Columbus, who is called Colom in Mallorca.
Old town, harbor and lighthouse
The historic center of Es Riuetó is one of the best-preserved old town centers in Mallorca. Along the old pier, traditional boathouses (barraques) line up with their colorful gate doors, and in front of them lie the typical Mallorcan llaüts. Carrer de la Mar, with its pastel-colored fishermen’s houses, is one of the most photographed streets in the town. Also worth seeing are the Mare de Déu del Carme church from the late 19th century and the Far de Portocolom lighthouse on Punta de ses Crestes, which has been in operation since 1861 and can be reached from the town center via a coastal path of around two kilometers.
Cala Marçal – the most beautiful beach in the region
To the west of the historic town center lies Cala Marçal, Portocolom’s largest and best-known beach. Fine golden sand, crystal-clear turquoise water and a gently sloping entry make the rock-sheltered bay particularly family-friendly.
