Port d’Andratx in the southwest of Mallorca is considered the island’s most beautiful harbor town and has managed to preserve a touch of authenticity with its fjord-like bay.
Through a wooded landscape of fragrant pines, the winding road leads from Camp de Mar in the southwest of Mallorca to Port d’Andratx. As if out of nowhere, in the last few meters you catch sight of the pretty blue bay with its countless white boats; in the background, the Tramuntana mountains rise majestically.
To the left and right of the U-shaped bay of Port d’Andratx, long and short breakwaters and jetties extend into the harbor; many boats, from old fishing cutters to elegant sailing yachts, bob gently on the waves. The marina, regarded as one of the most beautiful natural harbors in the world, feels almost like a small fjord. Around 500 vessels can moor here – and in the summer months they do, at least it feels that way. The “Club de Vela Puerto de Andratx” is particularly popular with sailors, not least because the sheltered harbor is so easy to approach.
In the morning you can watch the fishermen; in the afternoon their green and blue nets lie spread out on the pier, creating an almost artistic picture. The catch is sold to many fine restaurants in the area, and some of the seafood can be bought directly in the fish market hall at the harbor.
The center of the little town, popular with many day-trippers, is the promenade Avenida Mateo Bosch, which runs along the southern side of the harbor. Elegant cafés such as Cappuccino (Avenida Matteo Bosch 31) and restaurants such as Can Pep (Avenida Mateo Bosch 30) line up here. Tourists meet at Can Pep especially for fresh seafood and ice-cold white wine, but so do residents from the villas and luxury apartment buildings around Port d’Andratx. Great cocktails, a lovely rooftop terrace and a rotating art exhibition are on offer at the elegant La Ronda ArtCafé (Avinguda de l’Almirant Riera Alemany 10), and for a late nightcap, the always well-opened Bar Tim`s (Avenida Almirante Riera Alemany 7) is ideal.
