Palma’s magnificent 14th-century cathedral is known as La Seu and is a must-see landmark in the Mallorcan capital. This impressive golden sandstone building cannot be missed: one of the tallest Gothic structures in Europe, it dominates the Parc de la Mar, a unique sight for those arriving by sea.
This cathedral was built on the site of a mosque that stood next to the royal palace La Almudaina during the Moorish rule. The story of La Seu began when King Jaume I was on his way to the island: fighting the rough sea, his fleet of ships and sailors were in great danger, the young king made an oath that he would build a massive cathedral if he succeeded in driving the walls from the island. His successful endeavor should be visible to everyone.
