\nThe island’s largest natural harbor
\nPortocolom (also Porto Colom) is located on Mallorca’s east coast, around 60 kilometers from Palma, and belongs to the municipality of Felanitx. The former fishing village with around 4,000 inhabitants has retained its original character and is considered one of the island’s best-kept secrets. The wide-sweeping Badia de Portocolom forms Mallorca’s largest natural harbor. The name probably derives from the Latin Portus Columbi – a popular legend also links the town to Christopher Columbus, who is called Colom in Mallorca.
\nOld town, harbor and lighthouse
\nThe historic center of Es Riuet\u00f3 is one of the best-preserved old town centers in Mallorca. Along the old pier, traditional boathouses (barraques) line up with their colorful gate doors, and in front of them lie the typical Mallorcan lla\u00fcts. Carrer de la Mar, with its pastel-colored fishermen’s houses, is one of the most photographed streets in the town. Also worth seeing are the Mare de D\u00e9u del Carme church from the late 19th century and the Far de Portocolom lighthouse on Punta de ses Crestes, which has been in operation since 1861 and can be reached from the town center via a coastal path of around two kilometers.
\nCala Mar\u00e7al – the most beautiful beach in the region
\nTo the west of the historic town center lies Cala Mar\u00e7al, Portocolom’s largest and best-known beach. Fine golden sand, crystal-clear turquoise water and a gently sloping entry make the rock-sheltered bay particularly family-friendly. In high season, lifeguards, showers, toilets, sun loungers and parasol rental, and a beach bar provide comfort. The bay flies the Blue Flag. Water sports such as SUP, kayaking and diving are available. If you prefer it quieter, you can reach the smaller, unspoiled neighboring bay of Cala Brafi on foot in about ten minutes.
\nCuisine and surroundings
\nThe harbor restaurants serve freshly caught fish and classic Mallorcan cuisine, accompanied by wines from the Felanitx region. A culinary highlight is the Fira Gastron\u00f2mica d’Es Pop at the end of June, centered around octopus.
